MOUNTAIN HAY FOR SALE POLICIES

We sell by the bale, not by the ton. When we are baling our hay, we routinely check our bale weights so that they are uniform. Hay does lose weight over the course of a summer, fall, and winter, so bales that weighed 65 pounds when they were put up in June might weigh 10% less the next February. If you are buying round bales, we take a representative load of round bales right out of the field, and record that weight. Then we calculate a per-bale price according to the weight of the bales when it was baled.

You are responsible for checking the quality of the hay AT OUR FACILITY. If you purchase hay from us, once it leaves our property, IT’S YOURS. We do not accept returns. We make every effort to sell top-quality hay and represent it honestly. There may be an occasional bale with a moldy spot or a few weeds in it, but we try very hard to deliver a high-quality product. WE ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT ACCEPT RETURNS. Here's why--it's not a matter of product--it's a matter of labor to load and stack the hay, hauling with extremely expensive diesel fuel, and then stacking it in your barn. Once all that is done, if you see two slightly moldy bales out of 500 delivered, and send the whole load back, it's a huge expense and a lot of work to take it back. We'd rather do it the other way--if you want to be picky, you can do it here, where our hay is stored. If it's not important enough for you to come inspect the hay, then you must trust our judgment to deliver high-quality hay to you.

When buying hay from us, you must pre-pay with either cash, money order, or credit card. We will charge an additional 5% for credit cards. We do not accept personal checks unless you’re a previous customer or unless your check clears well before you pick up hay. We do not invoice hay buyers.

You are responsible for loading and shipping your hay. We will help provide trucking and labor at a fair price.

Those who buy early in the season get the best pricing and the best hay. Quantity buyers get discount pricing. See our trucking/hauling page for information on hay hauling, pricing, and quantities. We can easily load a large round bales onto a semi with a tractor in half an hour or so. If you want small square bales, however, that's your choice--and it takes a lot of labor to load 600 bales onto a semi tractor trailer. Either you provide the labor, or you pay use to book the labor. It's that simple. The prices quoted on this website are for bales of hay at our ranch. If you'd like a quote for hay delivered to your property, we can give you a bid. There are several factors to consider. Diesel fuel is now $4.15 a gallon as I write this, and a diesel pickup towing a trailer with 150 bales of hay will get about 8-10 miles per gallon. It can take 2 men 2 hours each to stack 150 bales on the trailer. Then you have driving time, and delivery time, and don't forget that new diesel pickups start at about $38,000. Add it all up, and it's expensive to deliver hay.

You may want to consider hiring a semi-tractor trailer and going in with 5 or 6 neighbors. You can reduce your costs fairly significantly. See our trucking and hauling page for more information.
